Over $3.6 Million in grants awarded to Alabama arts organizations
Grants for projects, operating costs, and federal recovery funding distributed to creative sector
MONTGOMERY, Ala., (September 14, 2021) - At its September quarterly meeting in Jasper, Ala., the Alabama State Council on the Arts awarded 219 grants totaling $3,667,300 to arts organizations in communities across the state. These grants are in response to applications submitted to the Alabama Arts Recovery Program and the Council on the Arts' annual grant cycle (June 1, 2021 deadline).
Alabama Arts Recovery Program
The Council on the Arts awarded $814,100 in federal relief funding to 63 arts organizations throughout Alabama. Federal dollars from the American Rescue Plan funded the Alabama Arts Recovery Program. The legislation provided funding to the National Endowment for the Arts, granting a portion to state arts agencies, including the Council on the Arts.
Alabama arts organizations are economic drivers, bringing tourism to communities and providing thousands of jobs statewide. As arts organizations return to providing in-person exhibitions, concerts, performances, readings, and programming to Alabamians, the Council on the Arts recognizes the need for financial support for various operating costs.
'Throughout the pandemic, the Council has supported Alabama's arts and culture sector through our grants. As arts organizations across the state safely reopen and return to in-person operations, we continue supporting recovery through the Alabama Arts Recovery Program,' said Dr. Elliot Knight, the Council's Executive Director. 'These federal funds will provide support for general operating costs and personnel, allowing organizations to continue providing artistic opportunities and creative experiences to our citizens and communities.'
Alabama Arts Recovery Programgrants will help arts organizations sustain operations. Funding will begin October 1, 2021, and must be expended by September 30, 2022.
Annual Grant Cycle
Additionally, the Council on the Arts awarded $2,853,200 in project grants and operating support to 132 arts organizations for activities occurring between October 1, 2021, and September 30, 2022.
Organizations providing public programs in arts education, folk arts, community arts, literary arts, dance, music, theatre, and visual art forms received support through this competitive process.
'We are pleased to support educational groups, community organizations, and arts institutions with these grants,' said Jim Harrison III, Chair of the Council on the Arts. 'Funds awarded through the Council's grantmaking process elevate arts in education, strengthen cultural expression, and attract tourists and new industry to our colorful and vibrant state.'
During their time in the host city, the Council on the Arts learned more about Jasper's arts community and attended a reception highlighting local artists. Support for arts programming is critical for a vibrant creative community, which results in a thriving arts economy, a workforce ready for innovation, and a high quality of life for all residents. However, the needs of the state's arts and culture sector are greater than the Council can fund, with the requested amount in this grant cycle totaling nearly $4 million.
More grant awards will be announced in early December. The next grant application deadline is March 1, 2022, for individual artist fellowships and grants for planning, design, and construction of cultural facilities.

About Alabama State Council on the Arts
The Council on the Arts is the official state agency for the support and development of the arts in Alabama. The Council works to expand and preserve the state's cultural resources by supporting nonprofit arts organizations, schools, colleges, units of local government, and individual artists. Arts programs, assisted by Council grants, have a track record of enhancing community development, education, cultural tourism, and overall quality of life in all regions of the state. Alabama State Council on the Arts grants are made possible by an annual appropriation from the Alabama Legislature and additional funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
