Moolenaar Votes Against Legislation That Bans Voter ID Requirements and Uses Taxpayer Funding to Pay for Political Campaigns

Tonight, Congressman John Moolenaar voted against legislation proposed by House Democrats that would eliminate states' voter identification laws and allow taxpayers' dollars to be used for funding political campaigns.

Immediately preceding tonight's vote on final passage of the bill, Moolenaar voted for an amendment to the bill that would have prohibited taxpayer funds from being used to fund political campaigns. However, that amendment was rejected by the Democratic majority.

'Taxpayers simply do not want their tax dollars being used to pay for political campaigns and I voted against this bill to try and stop that from happening,' said Moolenaar. 'I also voted against the legislation because it is a federal takeover of elections that would eliminate state laws across the country requiring voter identification. Americans use ID to drive and make purchases, and states provide IDs to those who cannot afford them. Voter ID helps ensure election integrity and states should require it.'

Earlier in the day, Moolenaar voted against an amendment to the bill that would have allowed 16-year old children to vote in elections. That amendment was rejected by a bipartisan majority, 302-125. A roll call of that vote is available here.
