Prime Minister Kallas: we must remember the horrors of the Holocaust

"Crimes against humanity must be remembered and addressed so that future generations would know how to prevent them from happening again. The Estonian people have also suffered due to the crimes committed by totalitarian regimes and that is why we understand the victims of the Holocaust well. Learning from each lesson from history is important and as they say: those who do not remember the past live without a future," said the prime minister at the forum. "Often, however, someone's personal experience or story is what has the largest impact - this is why we pay increasingly more attention to addressing the issue in Estonia in public spaces, exhibition halls, museums, and classrooms."

At the forum, Kallas presented the measures for countering anti-Semitism, approved by the government in the spring and based on the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism, including increasing the safety of Jews and their organisations, developing educational materials, developing educational programmes, fostering cooperation between various actors, and marking and honouring Holocaust-related execution sites and prison camps.

The forum brings together heads of state and government from all over the world and the representatives of the private sector and international organisations to discuss how to combat anti-Semitism and other forms of racism online and off-line and how to support Holocaust remembrance through the education system to prevent its recurrence.

The conference, originally scheduled to take place a year ago, marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp and the end of World War II.
