Adrienne Green Joins The New York Times Magazine

Last year, when Caitlin Roper took on a new job at The Times as executive producer of Scripted Film and TV projects, the Magazine was left without an editor focused on special projects. As the editorial director of NYT Mag Labs, Caitlin played a role in numerous Magazine special issues, including The 1619 Project, the Audio Voyages issue, several New York issues, and she had also helped us think up, organize, resource and execute a range of other special undertakings as well.

Since Caitlin's departure, we have felt the absence of a person in this job, which is why we've been diligently looking for someone new to come aboard in this capacity. I'm absolutely delighted to announce that this search has led us to a fabulously talented editor. Please help me welcome Adrienne Green, who will start in September as deputy editor, Special Projects.

Adrienne is currently a features editor at New York magazine, where she edits longform stories and works on big editorial packages and special issues. She was the editor behind New York's excellent recent special issue on the one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. She's also worked with a number of writers we all admire, from Allison P. Davis to Rebecca Traister.

Before New York, Adrienne was a managing editor at The Atlantic, where she oversaw the editorial workflow for the print magazine and collaborations with the digital, podcast, video and live events teams. And before that she was a part of The Atlantic's special projects team, working across a range of departments and media. While at The Atlantic she took a lead role in producing their special issue on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., another excellent special issue.

One of Adrienne's main jobs at the Magazine will be brainstorming and organizing our special issues, and leaning into the Magazine's capacity to generate big ambitious multimedia enterprise journalism. She'll bring her considerable vision to bear on these issues, and also her wonderfully collaborative spirit, which we hope will enable deeper partnerships with other desks.

Overseeing our special issues is the primary part of this job, but the Magazine often finds itself involved in other special non-magazine projects as well, from virtual reality to live events. With a deputy editor dedicated to special projects we'll be able to make the most of these opportunities.

I'm thrilled to bring Adrienne aboard. Her wide-ranging intelligence, collegial spirit, ambition, sense of humor and sense of purpose will make her a great addition to the Times, someone who will help define and create the next phase of the Magazine's life and who will be having an impact on the newsroom for years to come. She's an excellent editor, a great generator of ideas and a deft facilitator of complex teams. She has a particular talent for knowing how to get big things done, which is truly the essence of this job. And she's a lovely person, who I know will be a great colleague.

Adrienne is a graduate of Ohio University and was born in New York and raised in New Jersey. Please join me in welcoming her to The Times!
