Foreign Minister Liimets attends the high-level opening week of the UN General Assembly

From 20 to 24 September, Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets attends the opening week of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly that brings together heads of state and government, ministers and representatives of international organisations from across the world.

The United Nations was founded 76 years ago to uphold international peace and security, protect human rights and encourage global economic and social development. "The UN's role remains crucial in meeting global challenges in today's restless world. This is why I am glad to attend several discussions to find common solutions to these concerns and address the key topics of global politics at bilateral meetings with colleagues from more distant countries," Foreign Minister Liimets said.

"Estonia has always prioritised standing up for the security of our region but we also understand how crises elsewhere affect our region. This is why we are underlining that a small state can be a respected participant and initiator on the international arena - we have emphatically demonstrated this as an elected member of the UN Security Council. For example, last week, together with Norway, we successfully completed the negotiations on the extension of the mandate of the UN's Afghanistan mission - the resolution was adopted with 15 votes in favour. I must also mention that Estonia was the first to introduce cybersecurity into the official agenda of the UN Security Council."

Due to the pandemic, several meetings are held virtually.
