CHILDRENS LAKE TO BE DRAWN DOWN TEMPORARILY FOR PRE-CONSTRUCTION SURVEY

HARRISBURG, Pa. (January 26) - The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) announced today that Childrens Lake, located in the Village of Boiling Springs, South Middleton Township, Cumberland County, will be temporarily drawn down for a pre-construction survey.

Beginning Friday, January 28, visitors to Childrens Lake will notice a reduction in water levels over the course of a few days. The purpose of this temporary draw down of the lake is to provide construction contractors who are bidding on the pending three-million-dollar dam reconstruction project an opportunity to view the lakebed, retaining wall, and other dam infrastructure that is difficult to see when the lake is filled with water. Upon completion of the survey during the first week of February, the lake will be refilled to its current levels.

Childrens Lake is a spring-fed lake that is stocked annually with trout by the PFBC but contains very few resident, naturally occurring fish. During previous maintenance drawdowns, fish including stocked trout, sunfish, and suckers living in Childrens Lake have been able to move downstream into the Yellow Breeches Creek without assistance. For this reason, a fish salvage operation will not occur as part of the upcoming drawdown.

The PFBC intends to stock trout in Childrens Lake ahead of the upcoming 2022 spring trout season so that anglers may continue to enjoy the resource as long as possible. Construction is expected to begin in May 2022, at which time the lake will be drawn down and closed to the public for approximately one year.
