Grand Wagoneer Concept and Wrangler 4xe Take Jeep® Portfolio to New Heights

September 7, 2020 - Last week, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles showed the world the future power of the Jeep® brand with the introduction of the Grand Wagoneer Concept and the Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid.

These two models - which made their debut during a virtual unveiling in Detroit - will expand the Jeep portfolio like never before when they roll into showrooms next year.

'Our new Grand Wagoneer Concept marks the first step in the rebirth of Wagoneer - a true and rare premium American icon,' said Christian Meunier, Global President of the Jeep brand. 'With the electrification of each Jeep nameplate coming in the next few years, and the reintroduction of Wagoneer, we are quickly expanding into new segments and more premium space.'

The Grand Wagoneer will define 'American Premium' while delivering an unprecedented driving experience.

It boasts a wide array of leading-edge premium technology - including an electrified powertrain, sophisticated 4x4 off-road systems, and a first-ever passenger screen in an SUV that is part of an unmatched selection of upscale, premium interior features.

'The Grand Wagoneer Concept's interior is spacious and features premium materials that accentuate our team's obsession to detail and celebrates American craftsmanship,' said Ralph Gilles, Head of Design for FCA. 'A full digital cockpit takes advantage of leading technologies that are beautifully presented with expansive and easy-to-use screens and limited buttons, allowing the focus to be placed on a pleasant and intuitive experience for the driver and passengers.'

With this new Concept, the Grand Wagoneer nameplate features - for the first time ever - a spacious third row.

Born in America in 1962 for the 1963 model year, Wagoneer was the first four-wheel-drive vehicle mated to an automatic transmission, pioneering the first modern SUV.

Production versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will be built in Warren, Michigan, located just outside Detroit. As a nod to its manufacturing home and the brand's headquarters, the Concept's full-pane glass roof houses a map showcasing Detroit and the surrounding area.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain is capable of up to 25 miles (40 km) of nearly silent, zero-emission, electric-only propulsion, making it commuter-friendly as an all-electric daily driver without range anxiety.

The Wrangler 4xe's advanced powertrain provides a unique on- and off-road experience through the combination of two electric motors, a high-voltage battery pack, a high-tech 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine and robust TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. The most advanced powertrain ever developed for a Jeep Wrangler maximizes efficiency with an estimated 50 miles per gallon equivalent.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe - to be built in Toledo, Ohio - will be available in the U.S., Europe and China by early 2021.

Jeep will offer electrification options - marked by the 4xe badge - on each nameplate in the next few years as it strives to become the leader in eco-friendly premium technology. The Jeep Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe models - introduced last year in Geneva - began arriving in Europe this summer. The new Jeep 4xe models follow the introduction of the Jeep Grand Commander PHEV in China last year.

'Our Jeep 4xe vehicles will be the most efficient, responsible and capable that the brand has ever created,' Meunier said. 'The electrification of the Jeep lineup will allow commuters to travel solely on electric power, delivering an efficient and fun on-road experience and offering an ability to enjoy even more Jeep capability off-road in nearly complete silence.'
