Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu spoke on the phone to the Foreign Minister of Georgia David Zalkaliani and opposition leader Grigol Vashadze about the political situation in Georgia. On Saturday, the second round of parliamentary elections was held in Georgia.
'The Georgian foreign minister, the opposition leader and I discussed the political situation in the context of the parliamentary elections in the country. I called on the current government and the opposition to engage in dialogue. The most important consideration in this process is respecting the rule of law and democracy,' Foreign Minister Reinsalu said.
'In our conversation, I reaffirmed Estonia's strong support for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty,' Foreign Minister Reinsalu said. 'I also expressed support for Georgia's ambitions of Euro-Atlantic integration,' he added.
The first round of parliamentary elections was held in Georgia on 31 October. The opposition does not recognise the legitimacy of the elections and demonstrations have been held in the country.
