Socktober fundraiser kicks off Oct. 1 at Galion Primary and Intermediate Schools

September 28, 2021

Teaching students about giving back to their community and helping those less fortunate is an important part of the educational experience for students in the Galion City Schools. The Galion Primary and Intermediate Schools are teaming up to work together to conduct the annual "Socktober" fundraiser from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31.

The Intermediate School's fifth-grade team, after reviewing the idea from YouTube sensation Kid President, decided to launch the "Socktober" fundraiser at the Intermediate School during the 2014-2015 school year. In the three-minute video, Kid President challenged Internet users to change the world.

"I presented the 'Socktober' idea to my fifth-grade teammates and we thought it would be a great way to get our students helping others in need," Galion Intermediate fifth grade teacher Paula Prince said. "Our seven-year collection total has exceeded 6,000 pairs of socks!"

Intermediate School students who donate two pairs of socks each week can wear a shirt of their choice each Friday, three pairs of donated socks and students can wear jeans, 5 pairs of socks and students will have the opportunity to wear a hoodie, and students who donate six or more pairs of socks each week can wear a shirt of their choice, jeans, and a hoodie.

Primary School students who donate one pair of socks each week can wear a hat each Friday, two pairs of donated socks and students will receive a prize from the Primary School office, and students who donate three or more pairs of socks each week can bring in a stuffed animal.

Incentive dates for students at both Galion Primary and Galion Intermediate are as follows: October 1, October 8, October 15, October 22, and October 29.

"Students are decorating boxes for each classroom at the Intermediate Building so classrooms can begin to collect socks for Socktober," Prince said. "Students will work in small groups to deliver the boxes and explain to each classroom what Socktober is all about and the goal for this year."

This year's goal for both the Primary School and the Intermediate School is to exceed the 2020 collection total of 1,900 pairs of socks.

"I am very proud of our students and staff at the Primary and Intermediate Schools for taking the time to help those in need in our community," Galion Superintendent Jennifer Allerding said. "Student-led community service projects enhance the overall education of students in the Galion City Schools, and I'm proud of all our students and staff in the district for finding ways to help the Galion community in a variety of ways."
