RGV Border Patrol Agents Participate in Red Ribbon Week

EDINBURG, Texas -Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol (RGV) agents will soon begin doing their part in helping kids remain drug-free. Agents will conduct presentations at schools throughout the valley in the upcoming weeks as part of the nation-wide drug prevention campaign.

Red Ribbon Week is the largest drug prevention awareness program in the nation and will be held Oct. 23 - Oct. 31. The 2021 National Red Ribbon Week theme is "Drug Free Looks Like Me." This year RGV agents are preparing presentations to be held at local schools to remind students of the dangers of drugs and to encourage them to be drug free. Presentations include in-person agent experiences, K9 demonstrations, as well as a video production composed by agents who graduated from local schools across the Rio Grande Valley.

"This next week, the legacy of fallen DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena will live on through the millions of Americans who will don red ribbons in a pledge to living a drug-free lifestyle. And, our Red Ribbon Week campaign will distinguish itself as an event which will reflect on those who have lost their lives in the pursuit of safe and drug-free communities," said RGV Chief Patrol Agent Brian S. Hastings. "Our message to the kids is simple: There's nothing more important than your safety, so stay away from drugs because you will be the teachers of tomorrow, the leaders of tomorrow, the Border Patrol agents of tomorrow!"

The presentations and video all serve as a reminder that there are benefits to living a drug free life.
