Multiple roads damaged in San Luis Valley

MONTE VISTA, Colo.- The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) San Luis Valley Field Office is currently experiencing an unusually wet summer, which has damaged numerous roads across the field office.

The extent of the road damage is unknown. BLM is assessing which roads have been damaged, determining the repairs necessary, and prioritizing the repair work. Due to limited funds for road maintenance, poor road conditions may persist for an extended period.

"Visitors should be aware of road damage and changing conditions, paying close attention to the road ahead for unexpected hazards," said acting Field Manager, Dario Archuleta. "If road conditions exceed your vehicle's capability, you will need to turn around." It is illegal to create new routes to avoid impassable sections of roads. Reduced speeds are recommended on all Field Office roads.

For more information on conditions, please email the San Luis Valley Field Office at: [email protected], call the field office at (719) 852-7074, or visit https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/recreation-activities/colorado/closures/san-luis-valley-field-office.
