Second phase of phone surveys to monitor the impacts of COVID-19 in Latin American and Caribbean countries
Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) has been one of the regions in the world most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Between March and August 2020, the World Bank conducted a series of High-Frequency Phone Surveys (HFPS) to assess the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the welfare of Latin American and Caribbean households and inform policies that limit the economic and social effects of the crisis. The data collection consisted of three waves of surveys per country, in which nationally representative information was collected for fourteen countries in the region: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Saint Lucia.
A new phase of surveys is being implemented in 2021 to continue monitoring the effects of the pandemic on households' welfare. In this new phase, data is being collected in over 20 countries in the region: the fourteen countries included in the first phase plus Antigua & Barbuda, Belize, Guyana, Dominica, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, and Uruguay.
The first wave of surveys was carried out between July and August 2021. A second wave is currently being implemented, and the fieldwork is expected to extend between October and December 2021.
The selected households will answer a series of questions on topics considered the most affected during the pandemic, such as employment, income, food security, and access to essential services.
