International trade in goods in June 2021: significant increase in imports (+33.1%) and exports (+20.9%) in comparison to the weak results in June 2020

Vienna,2021-09-07 - The value of imports of goodswas at €15.58 bn in June 2021, an increase of 33.1% compared to June 2020, according to preliminary results by Statistics Austria. At the same time, exports of goodsrose by 20.9% to €14.02 bn. The balance of trade thus showed a deficit of €1.56 bn. Working-day adjusted, the rates of increase were 28.3% for imports and 16.8% for exports. The strong increases are again related to the low level of international trade in goods (ITGS) in June 2020. It was the first reporting month after the continuous lockdown in Austria due to COVID-19.

The four most important product groups for international trade in goods are machinery and transport equipment, manufactured goods, chemicals and related products and miscellaneous manufactured articles. Aggregated they showed an import growth of 19.3% to €11.83 bn and their exports rose by 26.8% to €12.08 bn. The highest absolute growth in exports was recorded with manufactured goods (+35.0%) followed by machinery and transport equipment (+15.8%).
