BME and Kreab bring together leading economic experts to discuss post-trade

  • A wide range of national and international speakers analysed the challenges of post-trade in the post-pandemic recovery environment
  • The event featured three round tables covering regulation, digitalisation and sustainable investment in this industry

BME and the communication consultancy Kreab, today hosted a gathering in the Madrid stock exchange to discuss the main challenges of post-trade in the context of the economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. The event was opened by Verena Ross, Executive Director of ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority), and Rodrigo Buenaventura, Chairman of the CNMV (the Spanish securities market supervisor). Both agreed that post-trade is one of the factors that will condition the future of the market and financial movements most decisively, given that this is a sector in constant change.

The conference featured three different round tables in which a broad representation of national and international panelists took part. The aim was to shed light on the opportunities and challenges posed by the industry in the new post-pandemic scenario, focused on regulation, digitalisation and sustainable investment.

The first debate, entitled 'Impact of the new regulatory challenges on post-trade infrastructures and their participants', was moderated by the CEO of Iberclear, Jesús Benito, and had the participation of Ana Puente, Deputy General Manager of Securities Market and Financial Instruments legislation at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation; Aurora Cuadros, Corporate Head at Cecabank; Gloria Hernández, Partner at finReg360; and Manuel Pineda, Head of the Securities Custody and Settlement department at Citibank. The experts highlighted the simplification and modernisation of securities market procedures, the protection of investors in listed companies and the transposition of limitations set by Europe.

The second round table had the participation of by Alberto López Nestar, Head of Technology, Projects and Innovation at Iberpay; Alexis Thompson, Head of Global Securities Services at BBVA; Francisco Béjar, Deputy General Manager at Iberclear; and Miguel Jaureguizar, Head of Digital Development at Renta4. Cristina Arévalo, COO at BNP Paribas Securities Services, moderated the panel. The panelists discussed cryptocurrencies, their risks and the future prospects of these assets in such a volatile market as the current one.

The third debate was moderated by Alberto Muelas, Head of Sustainable Business Consulting at Kreab, with the participation of Aaron Morales, Head of ESG Business Development in Iberia and Latin America at Standard & Poor's; Francisco Benedito, CEO of ClimateTrade; Javier Garayoa, General Manager at Spainsif; and Lara Altable, Head of SRI Management and Policies at Santander Asset Management.

Ulrich Bindseil, General Manager of market infrastructure and payments at the European Central Bank (ECB), and Javier Hernani, CEO at BME, closed the event by highlighting the enormous importance of other aspects of post-trade such as digitalisation, the use of blockchain technology and sustainability.
