Rock superstar & ‘Bat Out of Hell’ singer Meat Loaf has died at 74

Rock superstar and Grammy Award winner Meat Loaf - best known for his beloved 1977 album, Bat Out of Hell, which is one of the bestselling records of all time - passed away on Thursday with his family at his side. The cause of death is still unknown.

Meat Loaf, whose real name is Marvin Lee Aday, was born in Dallas in 1947. Before launching his music career, Meat Loaf acted in high school plays. After joining a local production of Hair in Los Angeles following college in the late 1960s, he formed a band with Shaun Stoney Murphy in Los Angeles, releasing their first and only album together, Stoney & Meatloaf, which produced the single "What You See Is What You Get."

Drifting back to the stage, Meat Loaf landed a role in the original Broadway cast of The Rocky Horror Show. His music breakthrough happened after he met songwriter Jim Steinman in the 1970s. They recorded and released Bat Out Of Hell in 1977, which was produced by Todd Rundgren but rejected by every major label until Epic picked it up. Bat Out Of Hell yielded three singles: "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth" and "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad." After a tour, Meat Loaf and Steinman went separate ways.

Meat Loaf continued releasing albums, but nothing could eclipse his debut release. Over the course of his career, he acted in a number of movies, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Wayne's World (1992) and Fight Club (1999).

In 2011, he appeared in the reality show Celebrity Apprentice and had an epic meltdown with Gary Busey, which went viral. His Bat Out Of Hell album was also adapted into the musical Bat Out of Hell: The Musical in 2017.
