NOFD Battles Two-Alarm in the 1500 Block of North Broad

On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 9:50 p.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to a reported residential fire in the 1500 block of N. Broad St. The first NOFD Fire Operations unit arrived on the scene at 9:54 p.m., finding a single-family, wood-framed dwelling, at 1561 N. Broad St., with flames already engulfing the entire rear of the dwelling. The eminent danger posed to an exposed property to the left, prompted the request for a second alarm almost immediately. Upon arrival firefighters were notified that the couple that lived at this address, as well as the elderly female residing in the exposure at 1557 N. Broad St., had escaped safely prior NOFD arrival.

The original fire building experienced severe damage to its rear, eventually resulting in the collapse of that section of the home. Fortunately, firefighters were able to limit the damage to the exposure (only a few feet away) to moderate damage to its right and rear exterior walls. This damage was mostly caused by direct exposure and radiant heat prior to NOFD arrival. Seventeen NOFD units supported by forty-seven Fire Operations personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 10:20 p.m. Both properties are currently uninhabitable. The utility meters were pulled 1557 N. Broad St. as a precaution until further damage assessments can be made. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is currently being investigated. The Red Cross has been called to the scene to assist these residents with their immediate housing needs.
