Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras sign memorandum of understanding on consular cooperation
  • The MoU will allow the three countries to cooperate on consular assistance and protection, mainly in North America.
  • With its leadership in this area, Mexico will help empower Guatemalan and Honduran communities in the U.S. and Canada.

At the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection Ministerial Meeting, held today in Guatemala City, Foreign Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra and her counterparts from Honduras, Enrique Reina, and Guatemala, Carlos Ramiro Martínez, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Consular Cooperation, Protection and Assistance for migrant communities.

The MoU will allow the three countries to share best practices and create synergies to provide assistance and protection to their nationals through their consular offices, mainly in the United States and Canada, although it is open to other regions of the world, as well.

The goal of the MoU is to defend and promote migrants' human rights by holding events to provide information, integration and socialization, and by offering training for officials that benefit the rights and interests of the communities of the three countries.

Mexico, with its extensive consular network of 58 offices in the United States and Canada, reaffirms its commitment to provide assistance to the Mexican community and to share its consular assistance and protection capabilities with the consular networks of Guatemala and Honduras, to benefit the communities of those two countries.
