City of Chicago Announces Lineups for Marquee Fall Music Festivals: Chicago Jazz Festival: September 1 – 4

Presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and its Partners, These Free Festivals Celebrate Chicago's Music Legacy in Millennium Park, at the Chicago Cultural Center and Citywide

CHICAGO-Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) announced today music lineups and expanded date information for three of the City of Chicago's most beloved fall music festivals starting September 1. Following the successful return of three other iconic festivals this summer - Chicago Gospel Music Festival, Chicago Blues Festival and the ongoing Millennium Park Summer Music Series - DCASE is happy to continue to showcase a diversity of musicians from Chicago and around the world with FREE concerts in Millennium Park and in venues across the city with the return of the Chicago Jazz Festival (Sept. 1-4; neighborhood concerts Aug. 23-31); Chicago House Music Festival and Conference (new expanded dates: Sept. 15-18) and World Music Festival Chicago (Sept. 30 - Oct. 9). • The Chicago Jazz Festival (September 1-4) returns with performances celebrating all forms of jazz in Millennium Park and at the Chicago Cultural Center. Produced by DCASE and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago (JIC), schedule highlights include Henry Threadgill and Zooid, Bill Frisell, William Parker and his quintet, Miguel Zenón, Linda May Han Oh and Jazzmeia Horn, among many others. This year DCASE continues the Citywide Jazz Community Funding Program, which funds local venues presenting their own free Jazz performances between August 23 and 31. The program celebrates Chicago's expansive Jazz community and builds momentum in the lead-up to the Labor Day performances. As in previous years, outside alcohol is not allowed for the Chicago Jazz Festival, but alcohol at various price points may be purchased inside the venue. • Chicago House Music Festival and Conference (September 15-18) announces expanded dates showcasing community partners across the city in addition to Millennium Park programming (Sept. 16). The festival returns with DJs and live performances highlighting the various sounds and styles of House Music, the genre born in Chicago that has gone on to revolutionize dance music internationally. Headlining the Friday, September 16 performance in Millennium Park is the GRAMMY-nominated Ten City in addition to Josh Milan and his acclaimed band. • World Music Festival Chicago (September 30 - October 9) brings global grooves by award-winning artists from around the world to the citywide, multi-venue festival featuring more than 30 artists and ensembles representing 22 countries and regions of the world. Now in its 22nd year of live, in-person performances, the festival also celebrates 10 years of Ragamala, the largest all-night long presentation of live Indian classical music in the United States. The Chicago Jazz Festival is a Labor Day weekend tradition that promotes all forms of jazz through free, high-quality music programming. The festival showcases Chicago's local talent alongside national and international artists to raise awareness and appreciation for one of the city's most beloved art forms.

In 2022 DCASE continues to support local venues and Jazz-presenting organizations that offer free, public concerts with the Citywide Jazz Community Funding Program. This program supports performances that take place between August 23 - 31, 2022 leading up to the Chicago Jazz Festival in September and building excitement for Chicago as a destination for Jazz. The venues/organizations selected this year include: The South Side Jazz Coalition, Hungry Brain, Constellation, Sleeping Village, The Birdhouse Inc., Live the Spirit Residency, 51st Street Business Association, Museum of Contemporary Art, Elastic Arts Foundation and The Whistler. Join us for a special 65th anniversary screening of the rare documentary Satchmo the Great, which follows Louis Armstrong on tour throughout Europe, Africa and back to the United States in the mid-1950s, as captured by the camera crews of legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with the Grammy Award-winning Director of Research Collections for the Louis Armstrong House Museum, Ricky Riccardi, with other notables from the Chicago Jazz scene. For those considering careers in music, each panelist will share details and perspectives on their own paths to their current professions in addition to discussing the career of Louis Armstrong and the content of the film. Chicago House Music Festival and Conference

Chicago House Music Festival and Conference returns with DJs and live performances citywide and in Millennium Park highlighting the various sounds and styles of House music, the genre born in Chicago that has gone on to revolutionize dance music internationally.

Festivities begin with a House Music Symposium at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at The University of Chicago exploring the history, culture, and business of House music (Sept. 15). Headlining the Friday, September 16 Millennium Park performance is GRAMMY-nominated Chicago House band Ten City along with Josh Milan and his band from New York with additional performers to be announced. Saturday, September 17 includes a daytime celebration of Frankie Knuckles by Rebuild Foundation and an evening bus tour of venues and DJs throughout the city by House Club Tour Chicago. Sunday, September 18 caps off with a daytime all-ages Footwork Dance Down by Open The Circle, a non-profit focusing on community organizing and racial justice through the arts. World Music Festival Chicago

Featuring 10 consecutive days of live, global music, World Music Festival Chicago returns with 34 bands (including three DJs) representing 22 countries and spotlighting 10 local music groups. Now in its 22nd year of live, in-person programming, the festival features performances in 11 indoor and outdoor venues across Chicago. 2022 will be the 10th year the festival presents Ragamala, the largest all-night long presentation of live Indian classical music in the United States. Visitors have the rare opportunity to hear the ragas (traditional scales or modes) during the early morning and late-night hours as they were meant to be played. The Ragamala celebration takes place at the Chicago Cultural Center from September 30 at 6pm through to October 1 at 8am.

Also new this year, the Global Peace Picnic (October 1) expands with two stages and eight bands. The citywide global celebration comes to a grand finale with a double-bill program on Navy Pier's Lake Stage, October 9, featuring Cha Wa (New Orleans, LA) and Héctor Guerra (Spain/Bolivia).
