Navigating the Wild AI with Dr. Scott Zoldi

In the fast-paced world of modern business, the rise of artificial intelligence offers a mix of promise and complexity for industry leaders. Dr. Scott Zoldi's latest LinkedIn series takes us right into the heart of this dynamic, engaging and enlightening discussions with leaders from diverse fields. These conversations address the strategies shaping very different organizations' impactful, responsible, and ethical use of artificial intelligence. Watch the series to explore how industry experts are navigating the intricate terrain of artificial intelligence and looking at approaches to unleash its potential.

Shana Simmons, formerly chief legal officer (CLO) at Everlaw and now CLO at Zendesk, offers insights into the integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into legal services, advocating for cautious and thoughtful implementation. She underscores the need and responsibility for law firms to consider security, confidentiality, and the evolution of their roles, stating, "There are several law firms that are proceeding cautiously and thinking about security, confidentiality, and their own jobs - they are paid by the hour. They'll have to shift how they bring value."

Shana highlights GenAI's efficiency, likening its role to that of an intern, emphasizing, "GenAI is so hot because of the increase of efficiency it creates for all. Any GenAI should be used like an intern. You check the work of your intern/folks who are working for us."

At Everlaw, employees were encouraged to use GenAI responsibly, guided by established best practices. Shana explains, "Since the release of GenAI, folks have been using and encouraged to use GenAI without exposing or sharing confidential information by following our internal set of deployed guidelines for best practices to follow: Set our own bar, respect for our users, and act with integrity and discipline."

Robert Knight, chief product and technology officer at DirectID, reflects on the impact GenAI has in open banking, stating, "It's fascinating and still relatively new. There's an awful amount of excitement. For me, it's still an unknown breadth of the offering of where this could go and how it can be adopted."

He emphasizes the centrality of trust in handling customer data, noting, "Trust is paramount and incredibly sensitive. We have to remember that people's lives are the center of some of the decisions being made that could enable them to get a mortgage or a car."

Robert discusses the regulatory landscape, mentioning, "Regulation is now playing catch up. There's been global conferences, EU working on provision guardrails and safety nets that will come into effect in 2025." Internally, he stresses compliance and governance, stating, "It's very important for me that we stay within regulation and that we adhere to our compliance, as well as having very good governance on change management."

He advocates for sandboxed experimentation while maintaining robust frameworks to prevent contamination of existing systems. Robert says, "We do need to make sure our people internally are aware of what's coming and can actually start to play around and see some value."

Stephanie Miller, an adjunct faculty member at Bowie State University, shares her perspective on the use of GenAI or ChatGPT in education, particularly for underserved students. She emphasizes the importance of responsible and transparent use of GenAI to benefit students' learning outcomes.

Stephanie advocates for prioritizing equity in the development and deployment of AI technologies, envisioning GenAI as a bridge for students lacking resources or traditional support systems. She emphasizes, "What if we could use GenAI as a bridge for students who need it the most? I think as we continue to develop this technology, we should think about equity first."

Additionally, Stephanie stresses the importance of teaching students how to use GenAI responsibly to foster critical thinking skills, expressing, "I want to teach my students how to use GenAI with transparency in a responsible way that incorporates critical thinking and also in a way that advances whatever project or goal they may have."

Regarding AI governance, she believes in balancing innovation with strong guidelines for ethical use, foreseeing AI's increasing significance in education and the workplace.
