SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. (SNSO) -On Friday, July 1, 2022 at 2:20pm, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received multiple 911 calls regarding a multi-vehicle accident near SW Topeka Boulevard and SW University Boulevard. Preliminary investigations shows two vehicles, a semi-truck and a pickup truck, were southbound on SW Topeka Boulevard and attempting to turn right onto SW University Boulevard. The semi-truck collided with the pickup truck. Both vehicles caught on fire. All three occupants were able to get out of the vehicles. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital by American Medical Response. The passenger of the pickup truck was checked out at the scene. A third vehicle may have been involved.
A subsequent minor accident also occurred between two different vehicles.
As of 4:47pm, the roadway is back open. We appreciate everyone's patience and assistance.
These accidents are still under investigation.
The Shawnee Heights Fire District, 190th Air Refueling Wing â€" Kansas National Guard, Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority Fire Department, Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority Police Department, BNSF Police, Kansas Highway Patrol, Evergy, and Shawnee County Public Works assisted at the scene.
