This weekend: Aerial structure repairs to close section of Blue, Orange, and Silver lines outside Stadium-Armory

For immediate release: April 16, 2024

During the weekend of Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21, Metro will resume weekend maintenance and construction, following a five-week pause for the busy cherry blossom season.

On the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines, efforts will continue on Metro's Aerial Structures Rehabilitation Project. Crews will work to reinforce the structural integrity of the aerial structure outside Stadium-Armory, closing a section of track where the three lines intersect. Crews will also install radio and fiber-optic cables, and repair concrete grout pads which support the rails.

During the weekend, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road on the Blue and Silver lines, and between Stadium-Armory and Minnesota Ave on the Orange Line. Additional work is also planned in this same area the following weekend, April 27-28.

Blue Line service will operate in two segments, between Franconia-Springfield and Federal Center SW and between Benning Road and Downtown Largo. Customers traveling to/from stations beyond Federal Center SW should transfer to/from the Silver Line and utilize free shuttle buses between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road.

Additional track and maintenance work is also planned for the Red Line, including tunnel leak mitigation, sealing up any water leaks within the system between Van Ness and Friendship Heights. On the Green Line between Anacostia and Southern Ave, Metro will install radio and fiber-optic cables along with maintenance on fasteners and studs that secure the tracks, welding to form a continuous rail that eliminates the separation between two sections of track, third rail maintenance, and leak mitigation.
