Wilmington Celebrates Public Works Week May 16, 17 & 19

The City's Public Works superheroes are "Ready and Resilient"

Wilmington's Department of Public Works joins more than 29,000 Public Works departments in the United States and Canada this week in celebrating National Public Works Week. The weeklong commemoration is an annual initiative of the American Public Works Association (APWA), a professional organization chartered in 1937 whose mission is to educate the public about the value and necessity of public works projects.

Wilmington's Public Works Commissioner Kelly Williams said her dedicated team of Public Works professionals is "ready and resilient" with the ability to perform regular Public Works duties and be ready at a moment's notice to react as first responders during natural disasters and overcome trials seen in the field. "Our Public Works professionals help keep communities strong by providing an infrastructure of services in Administrative, Engineering, Operations, Transportation and Water," said Williams. "They make our communities great places to live and work. So please join us in celebrating these superheroes!"
Commissioner Williams also reminds residents that requests for all Public Works services, such as special pick-ups or recycling bins, can be made by dialing 311 or online at www.wilmingtonde.gov/residents/311.

"I am incredibly proud of the contributions that our public works personnel make each and every day across our City," said Mayor Purzycki. "Commissioner Williams and I want citizens to understand the importance of public works in their daily lives, and to join with us in recognizing the employees who keep our city clean and running smoothly throughout the year."

Residents and visitors are invited to stop by the interactive exhibits that will be on display in front of the Louis L. Redding City County Building tomorrow, Tuesday May 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of Education Day. Departmental staff will be on hand to engage with residents, provide information, and answer questions. The schedule for the week is:

  • Monday, May 16, "Meet & Greet" in the Lobby of the City/County Building (8 - 10 a.m.)
  • Tuesday, May 17, Education Day: "Where Would the World Be Without Public Works?" outside the City/County Building, 800 block of North French Street (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • Thursday, May 19, Employee Celebration at the Municipal Yard Complex (11a.m.)
