Tuberville Takes Action to Recognize October 10th as ‘American Girls in Sports Day’

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) joined U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and 20 Senate colleagues in cosponsoring a resolution to recognize October 10th as 'American Girls in Sports Day.'

"Sports offer unlimited opportunities and teach great life lessons to our young women and girls," said Senator Tuberville. "But unfortunately, under Joe Biden, women's sports are under attack. Title IX is one of the best pieces of legislation to come out of Washington, D.C. It gave women access to the same scholarships, facilities, and opportunities as men. Since his first day in office, Joe Biden has taken a sledgehammer to women's sports by destroying Title IX. We won't be quiet about this. As long as I am a United States Senator and Joe Biden is in the White House, I will continue fighting to protect opportunities intended for women and to save girls' sports."

Joining Senators Tuberville and Blackburn are Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Jim Risch (R-ID), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Katie Britt (R-AL), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), John Cornyn (R-TX), Steve Daines (R-MT), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Mike Braun (R-IN), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Mike Lee (R-UT).

Riley Gaines, Sage Steele, Caitlyn Jenner, Concerned Women for America, Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, Family Policy Alliance, Alliance Defending Freedom, and Parents Defending Education Action have endorsed this resolution.

BACKGROUND:

As a former educator, mentor, and coach for more than 40 years, Senator Tuberville is concerned about the future of girls' and women's sports. He began his career coaching high school girls' basketball shortly after the enactment of Title IX and witnessed the law's positive impacts firsthand. Senator Tuberville has been a vocal advocate of preserving Title IX and urged Joe Biden's Department of Education officials to keep the protections in place.

In March, Senator Tuberville forced a vote on an amendment that would protect female athletes by keeping men out of women's sports - 51 Democrats voted to block the amendment from proceeding. Sen. Tuberville originally introduced the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Actin 2022, but Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has refused to bring it to the floor for a vote. Sen. Tuberville put 51 Democrats on record voting against protecting women's sports.
