#InGaraConNoi: focus on the opportunities of Expo 2020 Dubai

From 20 October 2020 to 10 April 2021, Dubai will host the Expo 2020, the first Universal Exposition ever organised in the region of the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) and hosted in an Arab country. 'Connecting minds, creating future' is the theme chosen for the event, which spells out Opportunities, Mobility and Sustainability.

The many opportunities are represented by the partnerships and business activities that may arise from the construction of the Expo site and of the different international pavilions (more than 200) to be built for the event.

Expo 2020 Dubai was the focus of one of the information events of the programme In Gara con Noi - Tender Lab, a roadshow that in the last few weeks has stopped at Milan, Bari and Bologna and was attended by almost 400 Italian companies.

In all three of these cities, a high-level Emirati delegation (including the Executive Director of the Organizing Committee of Expo Dubai and the Vice President of Procurement, Richard McGuire) illustrated to Italian companies the opportunities and the procedures to participate in the procurement process for Expo 2020.

The Expo's forecast impact

The Expo expects 25 million visitors, 70% of whom international, with expected peaks between 131,000 visitors a day and 173,000 in the weekends.

The Expo is forecast to receive 7 billion dollars in investments; 43 billion dollars will be invested in the sector of infrastructure and transport, 260 billion dollars in the energy (especially solar) sector. Overall, the flow of foreign investments is estimated to be between 100 and 150 billion dollars. Numerous sectors are involved in the new projects to be developed for the Expo: from road, airport, urban, water and electricity infrastructure, to construction and interior design, ICT, waste management, including luxury goods and services such as hospitality and event management, marketing, communication, logistics and technical and professional services.

What are the procurement opportunities?

The procurement strategy will be based on three key criteria: transparency, simplicity and inclusion.

All the Expo-linked business will go through an e-procurement platform - accessible at - that now has 21,500 companies registered (71% of SMEs), 900 of which are Italian.

The conditions offered to favour the participation of SMEs are particularly advantageous: 50% advanced payment for goods/materials; 25% advanced payment for services; payment at 30 days after receiving the invoice; no tender fee; bank cheques instead of advance payment guarantees.
