Friends University to host art demo with Native artist, Brent Greenwood

Wichita, KS- Friends University will host internationally acclaimed native artist, Brent Greenwood, on Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. for a free presentation and painting demonstration.

Brent Greenwood is a proud member of the Chickasaw and Ponca Nations of Oklahoma and the Director of Fine Arts for the Department of Culture and Humanities at The Chickasaw Nation. He is primarily an acrylics and mixed media artist, creating depth and emotion in his works by the various layers of paint, washes, drips and splatters on the canvas.

'In much of my work, I incorporate early tribal history and bring certain elements of designs and pieces of this period back to life through my paintings,' said Greenwood.

He is also known to add physical elements like horsehair, shells and beading to the canvas to create depth and to better tell the story of the piece.

Greenwood is a member of the Urban Indian 5 Artists of Oklahoma. He has also served on the board of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition and has sat on the Artsplace Advisory Board. He was one of eleven Native American artists to participate in the 'Art En Capital' at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2011 and has worked with Disney on updating their attractions.

You can find out more about Greenwood through his Chickasaw.TV video series.

The free demonstration and presentation is sponsored by Friends University's Visual Arts program and Multicultural Engagement department. It will take place in the Garvey Art Center on the Friends University campus at 2100 W. University Ave., Wichita, Kan.

Friends University, a Christian University of Quaker heritage, equips students to honor God and serve others by integrating their intellectual, spiritual and professional lives.
