What has changed

The government has announced that the measures put in place under Plan B in England will be lifted. This means from 27 January there will no longer be a legal requirement to wear a face covering in any setting. The government suggests that you continue to wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces where you may come into contact with other people you do not normally meet. This guidance will be updated shortly to include more information on these changes. You should continue to follow all of the guidance on this page to keep yourself and others safe.

This advice is designed to assist people who are involved in arranging or attending a funeral or commemorative event following a death from any cause during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It is also for professionals who may be involved in arranging or managing a funeral or commemorative event.

This guidance has been developed to ensure that:

  • people are treated with sensitivity, dignity and respect when someone dies
  • funerals and commemorative events can continue to take place while minimising the risk of infection

The easy read has been temporarily removed while it is being updated in line with the latest changes to guidance.

Please note

This guidance is of a general nature and should be treated as a guide, and in the event of any conflict between any applicable legislation (including the health and safety legislation) and this guidance, the applicable legislation shall prevail.
