Erkes' Shooting Can't Pull Wilkes Women's Basketball over the Hump against Alvernia
Wilkes fell to 4-13 overall while Alvernia, out of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth, improved its record to 4-14.
After only scoring 30 points in the first three quarters the scoring picked up for the Lady Colonels in the fourth quarter where they netted 30 more points but it was not enough to overcome Alvernia's lead. Both teams scored seven points within the first two minutes of the final quarter including an Erkes three. Erkes hit another one from behind the arc with 6:14 left to make the score 51-40. 's three-pointer from the right corner finally cut the Golden Wolves lead to single digits at 60-53 with 1:58 remaining. Wilkes could not close closer until the final shot of the game when Erkes hit her third three-pointer of the quarter to make it 65-60 just before the final horn.
A Kelley layup off a feed from put the Lady Colonels ahead 2-0 to start the game before the Golden Wolves would open an 11-4 margin. With 3:52 left in the first quarter hit a three-pointer to start a five point run by Wilkes but Alvernia would close out the first 10 minutes with a 19-11 lead.
hit a jumper and made a layup to get the Lady Colonels off to a good start in the first 1:11 of the second quarter. Wilkes closed the gap all the way down to just one point at 19-18 and kept the Golden Wolves off the scoreboard for the first 5:15 of the second quarter. Erkes checked into the game for the first time and immediately drained a trey with just over one minute left before half to pull the Lady Colonels to within a 26-22 score at the break.
Wilkes came out of the halftime break cold from the floor and Alvernia was able to extend its lead to a game-high 15 points for the first time at 39-24 with 2:28 left in the third quarter. Layups by and Smith got the Lady Colonels back in the scoring column and a layup by just before the buzzer pulled Wilkes back to within a 42-30 score heading to the final quarter.
Erkes went 4-of-5 from behind the arc for her 12 points in 11 minutes of action. Roberts led the Lady Colonels with 14 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. McFadden added 12 points and eight rebounds and Kelley scored nine points. pulled in a career-high nine rebounds.
Torie Zerbe had a big game inside for Alvernia with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Liv Andrefski (14 points) and Maya Cooper (11 points) were also in double figures.
The Lady Colonels are back to Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action on Wednesday when they travel to Dallas, Pa. to take on Misericordia University at 8:00 p.m.
