City to halt granting water variances from May 10 to Sept. 1

05/02/2024 - If you are considering replacing your grass or landscape plants, be aware that the City of Leander does not grant variances for extra watering with lawn sprinklers during the summer.

All new landscape watering for established properties must be completed by June 1. Variances run for 21 days. This means the last day the city will grant a 21-day variance is May 10. The variance ban lasts through Sept. 1, and is a permanent, annual requirement in the city's Water Conservation and Drought Contingency ordinance, which Leander City Council revised last year. The ban does not apply to new home completions.

The City added the ban on summer variances to the ordinance because watering during the hot months requires much more water to establish grass and plants. However, you may still water at any time with a hand-held hose or watering container while the city is in the current Phase 2 water conservation. This allows watering stressed areas and for smaller landscaping tasks. Learn more about Phase 2 at www.leandertx.gov/water
