[Women's Basketball] Fourth-Quarter Comeback Not Enough For Mustangs

DUBUQUE, Iowa - On Thursday night, the Mustangs battled conference foe, Clarke University. The 21st-ranked Pride utilized a quick start and balanced attack to derail the Mustangs. The Mustangs found a fourth-quarter spark, but it was too little, too late. The Pride defeated the Mustangs 91-65 as the Mustangs move to 1-4 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and 2-6 overall.

The Pride began the contest on a 5-0 run until the Mustangs were put on the scoreboard thanks to two free throws by Grace Stalzer (JR/Zearing, Iowa). The Pride continued an 11-2 run until Abbi Kinnaird (JR/Tiffin, Iowa) converted the first Mustang basket from distance. In the second quarter, the Pride led by as much as 16. Kennedi Fulwylie (JR/Detroit, Mich.) laid in a bucket right before the half, but the Mustangs still trailed 29-43. Out of halftime, the Mustangs were haunted by a slow third quarter. The Pride held the Mustangs scoreless for six minutes going on a 15-0 streak. This trend continued into the fourth quarter where the Pride held their largest lead of the game at 40 points. With 8:41 remaining, Sandra Mia (FR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) sparked a comeback after completing a three-point play. The Mustangs would end the game on a 23-11 run outscoring the Pride 25-24 in the fourth quarter. However, the comeback attempt was not enough.

As a team, the Mustangs shot 30.5% (18-59) from the field and 31.6% from beyond the arc, converting six of 19. At the line, the Mustangs were a season-best 23 of 25 (92%). The Mustangs pulled down 25 total rebounds as the Pride pulled down twice as many. Individually, Kinnaird led the Mustangs with 14 points after a 4-for-10 night from downtown. Brianna Thomas (SR/Mesquite, Texas) and Sofia Popp (FR/Saint Peters, Mo.) were also in double digits with 12 and 10 points respectively. On the boards, Taseandra Parker (SR/Aurora, Ill.) led with five rebounds. Mia and Aleah Cook (SO/Waterloo, Iowa) followed with four each. Chailey Cabalis (SO/Keaau, Hawaii) dished out four of the Mustangs' 14 assists. Kinnaird and Parker recorded three steals a piece while Popp and Kyleigh Milan (JR/Berthoud, Colo.) collected a block each on the night.

Up next, the Mustangs will travel to play the Vikings of Missouri Valley College on Saturday, December 7 at 12:00 P.M. in Marshall, Mo.
