Estonian Ambassador to Kazakhstan Toomas Tirs presents his credentials

On Wednesday 8 September, Estonia's new ambassador to Kazakhstan Toomas Tirs presented his credentials to the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Nur-Sultan.

Presenting his credentials, ambassador Tirs affirmed the good relations between Estonia and Kazakhstan and between the European Union and Kazakhstan, and highlighted potential areas of cooperation. 'Kazakhstan is the economic leader of Central Asia and the most important strategic partner of Estonia in the region. Next year, in 2022, Estonia is marking the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations with Kazakhstan,' Tirs said. 'We hope to have closer cooperation with Kazakhstan in various areas, such as information technology, logistics, education, green technologies and agriculture. As Kazakhstan has embarked on an ambitious digitalisation programme for public services, we can offer Estonia's expertise as well as opportunities for Estonian companies to take part in this plan,' he added.

Ambassador Toomas Tirs graduated from the University of Tartu and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a degree in business management. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2007 and has worked in the Political Department and the External Economic and Development Cooperation Department, as well as in the Permanent Representation of Estonia to the EU. In 2015, Ambassador Tirs worked as a national expert at the Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and at the Government Office as Head of Logistics of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU between 2016 and 2018. From 2018 to 2021, Toomas Tirs was the Estonian Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg and Deputy Head for Administrative Affairs at the Permanent Representation of Estonia to the EU.
