People living in Bungay and the surrounding areas are being encouraged to get involved with local activities to enhance their health and wellbeing and improve the lives of others in their community.

As a result of two health and wellbeing events which took place in the town earlier this year, East Suffolk Council's Communities Team and Bungay Town Council, supported by the Halesworth Volunteer Centre, have launched 'Bungay Live Well'.

The scheme will promote opportunities for people of all ages to get involved with and make a difference within their community, keep healthy and active and improve their quality of life. As well as enabling people to volunteer with various projects in their local area, Bungay Live Well aims to bring people together, encouraging them to join new groups and reduce loneliness.

With the support of local organisations, the scheme will showcase the wide range of voluntary and community run groups, clubs and organisations in Bungay and the surrounding area.

Cllr Letitia Smith, East Suffolk's Cabinet Member for Communities, Leisure and Tourism said: 'There are a huge number of ways for people to get involved in their community, whether through volunteering or by coming along to a group for the first time, or trying a new activity. Raising awareness of the wealth of opportunities available in and around Bungay will help people find ways to improve their quality of life, and the lives of others.'

Sue Collins, Mayor of Bungay said: 'Bungay Town Council is committed to promoting and supporting all activities and initiatives dedicated to the improvement of health and wellbeing within our community. Councillors are aware that facilities and opportunities often found in urban environments are less likely to exist within rural settings and small market towns such as ours which can result in individuals feeling isolated within their own homes.

'We hope to address this firstly by recognising the amazing work that is already in place by so many unsung heroes in the community and to support the establishment of new groups and activities that bring people together, enhancing both their physical and mental wellbeing. Therefore, we are delighted to work in close partnership with East Suffolk Council in establishing the Bungay Live Well Scheme that provides the structures, expertise and shared vision vital to bringing people together for mutual benefit whilst reducing the debilitating effects of loneliness.'

As part of Bungay Live Well, drop-in events will take place in the town, giving people the chance to find out more about voluntary and community groups, clubs and organisations in their area, to network, share ideas and encourage closer partnership working. The first of these events will be on Wednesday 25September (4-7pm) at The Riverside Centre, Bungay, NR35 1BF.

Local people are welcome to drop into the event and find out more about local clubs, groups, volunteering opportunities and more about what's happening in the town. Free refreshments will be available.
