AOC Staff Named as Finalists for Service to America Medal

The AOC's Chief Security Officer, Valerie Hasberry; Superintendent of the Capitol Building, Mark Reed; and Director of Capitol Grounds and Arboretum, Jim Kaufmann, were announced as finalists for the 2022 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals (Sammies), run by the nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service.

Selected from more than 400 impressive nominations, Hasberry, Reed and Kaufmann have been named Management Excellence finalists for their leadership in the cleanup, restoration and enhanced security efforts of the U.S. Capitol Building and grounds following the events of January 6, 2020. As a result of a hard work with their teams, the work of Congress continued and the presidential inauguration took place two weeks later.

Architect of the Capitol J. Brett Blanton believes the nomination is well deserved, "Recognizing the trust placed in us by Congress and the American people, these AOC leaders and their teams work tirelessly to provide a safe and inspiring experience for all who visit and work at the U.S. Capitol. I'm proud of all the AOC employees who, despite so much adversity, continue work so hard to preserve this cherished symbol of democracy. The overall success of the Capitol complex depends upon all of us working together."

All finalists are also eligible for the Service to America Medals People's Choice Award and you can support the AOC by voting for our team online. Vote each day now through July 1!
