Council Member Narvaez to recognize
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Day

Omar Narvaez, District 6 Council Member for the City of Dallas, along with representatives from Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Texas Rematriate, will join together to read Mayor Eric Johnson's proclamation recognizing May 5, 2022, as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Day.

"Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Day - also known as MMIW Day - is an annual initiative recognized every year on May 5 by cities across the United States and Canada. On this day, individuals promote awareness regarding the inequality and violence facing American Indian and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) women and girls," said Council Member Narvaez. "While AI/AN people make up a small percentage of our country's overall population, they represent an alarmingly disproportionate number of overall missing and murdered victims."

"We commemorate the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, two-spirits, and other relatives, while we continue to raise awareness, promote policies, and educate law enforcement, legislators, and the general public on the MMIW crisis; properly and respectfully collect and report MMIW data; strengthen interagency collaboration to protect Texas' indigenous persons in searches and the healing process," said Jodi Voice Yellowfish, MMIW Texas Rematriate.
