Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Congressman Donald Payne, Jr.

April 24, 2024

Washington, D.C. - Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the passing of Congressman Donald Payne, Jr.:

"The loss of Congressman Donald Payne, Jr. is a very sad loss for the people of New Jersey, for those of us who had the privilege to serve with him, and for our entire country.

"With public service in his DNA, Congressman Payne, Jr. made it his mission to deliver a better life for families in the Garden State and beyond. During his nearly twelve years in the House, our legislating was strengthened by his relentless focus on reimagining our infrastructure with equity and justice, especially his fight to secure clean drinking water for every child. Congressman Payne, Jr.'s final remarks on the House Floor were about the importance of lowering housing costs and expanding housing supply: a manifestation of his total commitment to America's working families.

"Our House Democratic Caucus was blessed by Congressman Payne, Jr.'s personal kindness, sense of humor and devotion to finding common ground - and we will miss him dearly. May it be a comfort to Beatrice, their three beloved children and the entire Payne family that so many in the Congress and across the country mourn their loss and are praying for them at this sad time."
