Navigation exhibition due to open at the Lancaster Maritime Museum

A new exhibition at the Lancaster Maritime Museum will answer these and many other questions about how vessels get from A to B, when all the crew can see is sky and water.

Navigation: Times, Tides, Stars and Charts will open on October 22.

The exhibition will engage visitors in the story of navigating at sea, from charting the oceans to using GPS, and asks "do navigators still rely on the 'old ways' and look to the stars"?

Using graphics supplied by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, the exhibition shows how complex the science of navigating is and introduces visitors to the difficulties of Morecambe Bay's shifting sands.

The exhibition will run until March 2022 and will be supported by a digital exhibition on the museum's webpages at www.visitlancaster.org.uk/museums, which will have even more content.
