On 29 March 2024, Mr. Guo Yonghang, Party Secretary of Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, met with H.E. Mr. Jakkapong Sangmanee, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Both sides exchanged views on promoting cooperation between Thailand and Guangzhou in various areas. They agreed that the close ties that have been forged and nurtured at the people to people level since historical times, have become a strong foundation for the wide and deepened cooperation that exists between Thailand and Guangzhou as well as Guangdong province today. They discussed prospects for export of Thai rice into Guangzhou market, investment from Guangzhou in EV industry, as well as cooperation in tourism, education, and sister cities, which Guangzhou has established with Bangkok since 2009. Most importantly, one of main objectives of Mr. Guo's visit to Thailand would be the signing of the Letter of Intent with the Governor of Chiangmai to establish sister city relations with Chiang Mai during this trip.

Mr. Guo is visiting Thailand between 29 March - 1 April 2024. It is his first visit to Thailand after assuming office, and the first Party Secretary of Guangzhou to visit Thailand in 15 years. Mr. Guo also took this opportunity to invite Deputy Foreign Minister Jakkapong to visit Guangzhou at his earliest convenience.
