Xi Jinping Speaks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo on the Phone

On April 20, 2021, President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation with Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the trade and investment cooperation between China and Indonesia has grown against the trend in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, showing strong resilience and great potential. China has embarked on a new journey toward fully building a modern socialist country, while Indonesia is moving towards achieving its centenary goal of leapfrog development. The two countries face broad prospects for cooperation. China welcomes Indonesia to seize the opportunity of China's fostering of a new development paradigm, advance the pragmatic cooperation between the two countries in various fields, and synergize the Belt and Road Initiative with Indonesia's vision for Global Maritime Fulcrum, so as to forge higher quality and larger scale cooperation. The two sides should continue to promote cooperation in infrastructure projects such as the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, implement key projects such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Corridor, cultivate such new growth areas as new energy and maritime cooperation, and strengthen cooperation in such fields as digital economy. China welcomes Indonesia to increase exports of quality products to China and supports Chinese enterprises to increase investment in Indonesia. The two sides should promote the effective implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, and promote regional trade liberalization and economic integration.

Xi Jinping stressed that both China and Indonesia attach great importance to the life safety and health of the people, and oppose 'vaccine nationalism'. The two countries' cooperation on COVID-19 vaccines is at the forefront of the world. While comprehensively advancing its domestic vaccination work, China will continue to carry out vaccine cooperation with Indonesia to help Indonesia build a regional vaccine production center, so to jointly resist the 'vaccine divide'. China has included foreign nationals in China, including those from Indonesia, as the vaccinated population, and hopes that Indonesia will also provide active support for Chinese nationals in Indonesia.

Xi Jinping emphasized that in the face of profound changes and a pandemic both unseen in a century, China stands ready to join hands with Indonesia to enhance strategic mutual trust, deepen strategic consensus, strengthen strategic coordination, uphold multilateralism, safeguard fairness and justice, promote global climate governance, defend the common interests of developing countries, and advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Joko congratulated on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). He said that under the strong leadership of the CPC, China has achieved success in all areas of development, especially in poverty alleviation and economic development, and has made positive contributions to the development of countries in the region, including Indonesia. Indonesia and China are good friends and good brothers. The Indonesian side hopes to learn from China's relevant experience, deepen the economic and trade relations between the two countries, actively promote the construction of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, deepen cultural exchanges, and advance Belt and Road cooperation. Joko thanks China for overcoming difficulties and providing valuable support for Indonesia in its fight against COVID-19 and hopes to continue to strengthen cooperation with China in vaccine production.
