Chairwoman Johnson Statement on UNEP Global Methane Assessment
(Dallas, TX) - Yesterday, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released a Global Methane Assessment report outlining the benefits and costs of mitigating methane emissions. The report, launched by the Climate & Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), sets forth an agenda that could reduce human-caused methane emissions by 45 percent this decade.
'Mitigating the climate crisis requires swift action across all aspects of human activity,' said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). 'The UNEP report provides readily available targeted measures that we can focus on to start making change now. In addition to the long-term climate change mitigation benefits, reducing methane emissions will save lives and reduce hospital visits from pollution-related illnesses like asthma and exposure to extreme heat. However, cutting back on human-caused methane emissions alone is not enough. We must continue to work across the science community and the agricultural and infrastructure sectors to combat the climate crisis on all fronts. Together, we will build a more resilient, sustainable, and healthier future.'
