Undersecretary Carmen Moreno travels to Vietnam

Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Carmen Moreno traveled to Vietnam from March 27-29. In Hanoi, she co-chaired the 7th meeting for bilateral political consultations with her Vietnamese counterpart. The two officials reviewed the political, economic and cooperation agendas, and discussed bilateral priorities, the progress made on specific projects, and new initiatives.

Due to Mexico's history of respecting the right to self-determination of peoples and the principle of non-intervention in the domestic affairs of each country, Mexico was one of the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam in 1975. Undersecretary Moreno laid a wreath at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, dedicated to the historic Vietnamese leader who is recognized for his struggle to achieve the independence of his nation.

A Memorandum of Understanding on Academic-Diplomatic Cooperation was signed between the Matías Romero Institute and the Vietnam Diplomatic Academy, reflecting the interest of both countries in strengthening the ties between their peoples, and particularly between their diplomatic cadres.

The senior Mexican official was received as a courtesy by Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son. The two officials agreed on the importance of the bilateral relationship and on the progress made in their collaboration over 48 years. They welcomed the agreements reached on peace and security, trade and development in the multilateral forums.

In order to raise the level of the relationship with a view to making it a comprehensive and long-term one that meets the domestic goals of each country, the officials advanced in establishing a Comprehensive Partnership, and in promoting trade under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Undersecretary Moreno reiterated Mexico's interest in receiving a visit from the president of Vietnam in the second half of 2023, when the goals of this stage of the bilateral relationship will be discussed in detail.

After 48 years of a close relationship, similarities in our historical struggles for independence, solidarity between our peoples, a belief in open economies that translate into employment opportunities for our citizens, and the mutual strengthening of our global competitiveness, Mexico and Vietnam reaffirmed in this meeting our solid bilateral dialogue and political relationship, and our interest in continuing to work together closely to further strengthen the ties of friendship and trust between our two nations.
