The `Runners scored three runs on four hits in their season opening game against Campbell. The highlight of the game for the `Runners was the double steal that first team preseason All-WAC and pulled off in the second inning. Hipa would steal home and Burt would steal second to tie the game at two. The `Runners would steal four bases in all as a team, including two by Hipa.
Roadrunner starting pitcher would get the start for CSUB to open the season. The senior would go three innings, allowed five hits and three earned runs. Evans would give way to and the freshman from Corona, Calif came out dealing in her first collegiate appearance. Hitzel would allow no runs in her two innings of work to keep the `Runners within striking distance.
CSUB senior would go 1-2, with two walks and scored a run.
Megan Richards would get the complete game win for Campbell and the Camels improve to 2-0 on the season.
The `Runners would not get their first hit until the fourth inning in game 2 against San Diego. But, junior would get an RBI single to cut the USD deficit to 4-1. And Cavazos and Jonhson would eventually come around to score after a couple wild pitches and CSUB cut the host school's lead to 4-3 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
Evans would start for the `Runners in game 2 and she would give CSUB three innings and allowed four runs on six hits. And just like game 1, Evans would give way for Hitzel. Hitzel would allow the first two runs of her career in the fourth, both were unearned, but that would give San Diego a 6-3 lead after four innings.
CSUB would get a rally going in the sixth inning. Burt would draw a leadoff walk and sophomore would follow with a single. Cavazos and Johnson would get back to back productive RBI groundouts and the 'Runners cut USD's lead in half and make it 7-5 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
would come in for Hitzel to pitch in the sixth and the redshirt freshman from Bakersfield would toss a scoreless sixth to give the 'Runners a chance in the seventh.
Hipa would walk to lead off the seventh. would follow and reach on an error, but the `Runners could not capitalize and would fall to San Diego 7-5.
The `Runners will continue play at the USD tournament tomorrow, Feb. 10 at 12 p.m. against Campbell and play the second of the doubleheader at 5 p.m. against San Diego.
