Michigan Civil Rights Commission Issues Statement on Law Banning Conversion Therapy in Michigan

Lansing, MI - Commissioner Luke R. Londo, on behalf of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, has issued the following statement in response to the passage and signing into law legislation banning the practice of conversion therapy in the state of Michigan.

"Conversion therapy, a dangerous and thoroughly discredited practice often fatal to those it purports to help, has no place in the state of Michigan. Yesterday, Governor Whitmer signed legislation that will help ensure that our children will never be subjected to this draconian treatment unanimously condemned by the medical community. In April, the Michigan Civil Rights Commission warned of the dangers of conversion therapy and called upon executive and legislative leaders to ban it. We commend those who drafted and supported this important bill and Governor Whitmer for signing it into law."

Commissioner Londo is the first member in the Michigan Civil Rights Commission's 60-year history to publicly identify as LGBTQ+.

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission was created by the Michigan Constitution to safeguard constitutional and legal guarantees against discrimination. The Commission is charged with investigating alleged discrimination against any person because of religion, race, color or national origin, genetic information, sex, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record, and physical and mental disability. The Michigan Department of Civil Rights serves as the operational arm of the Commission.
