School Life Expectancy, 2018-2022


School life expectancy (SLE) refers to the 'number of years that an individual of primary school starting age can expect to spend in education.

School life expectancy is used in the Human Development Index, Gender Development Index and Multidimensional Poverty Index calculated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Besides, it is published by UNESCO as an international education indicator.

Until now, school life expectancy has been produced by UNDP and UNESCO for Türkiye level. This indicator was produced for the first time on provincial level with this press release as official statistics to address national policies.

According to UNESCO 2021 results, the world average is 12.6 years, the average of North America and Western European countries is 16.8 years, and MES value of Türkiye is 19.7 years for primary to tertiary education level. According to the results of this study, SLE was calculated as 18.8 years for 2021 in Türkiye.
School life expectancy is 18.2 years in 2022

School life expectancy for a person of primary school entrance age until the highest level of education was 18.2 years in 2022. School life expectancy for a person of primary school entrance age until completing the upper secondary education level was 12.7 years in 2022.

School life expectancy was increased by 32.5% from 1.2 years in 2018 to 1.6 years in 2022 for pre-primary education.

The province with the highest school life expectancy was İstanbul

Highest school life expectancy on provincial level was in İstanbul with 20.3 years. İstanbul was followed by Karabük with 20.1 years, Ankara with 19.9 years, Bayburt with 19.6 years and Rize with 19.5 years. On the other hand, the provinces with the lowest school life expectancy were Şanlıurfa and Muş with 15.2 years, followed by Şırnak, Ağrı and Mardin, respectively.

The province with the highest increase of school life expectancy in the last 5 years was Çankırı with 8.2%

Çankırı with 8.2%, Gümüşhane with 5.8%, Ağrı with 5.2%, Van with %5.0 and Ardahan with 3.5% were the top five provinces where the school life expectancy showed the highest increase between 2018-2022. On the other hand, the provinces with a decrease were Eskişehir and Antalya with 7.2%, Düzce and Isparta with 6.8% also Karabük and Edirne with 6.3%.

School life expectancy by provinces was highest in Istanbul for males and females
SLE was 18.3 years for female and 18.1 years for male in 2022 for Türkiye level. Highest SLE was in İstanbul for both sexes. Bayburt, Karabük, Ankara and Erzurum followed İstanbul in males; and Karabük, Ankara, Eskişehir and Artvin in female, respectively.

Ağrı, with the lowest school life expectancy, was followed by Şırnak, Muş, Şanlıurfa and Iğdır respectively. On the other hand, the lowest school life expectancy in female was in Şanlıurfa, Muş, Şırnak, Bitlis and Siirt, respectively.

Gender parity index increased in favour of females in 5 years
The gender parity index is calculated by the ratio of female to male. Within the scope of school life expectancy, gender parity index was 1.01 in 2022 for ISCED 1-8 education level. The index, which was 0.97 in 2018, showed a change in favour of women with an increase of 0.04 points in the last five years.

The top five provinces with the highest index were Çanakkale with 1.07, Bilecik and İzmir with 1.06, Zonguldak and Edirne with 1.05. The top five provinces with the lowest index were Siirt with 0.88, Bitlis and Şanlıurfa with 0.90, Muş with 0.92 and Batman with 0.93, respectively.
