Labor and delivery services consolidating to University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center from University Hospitals Portage Medical Center
University Hospitals (UH) has announced plans to consolidate labor and delivery services from UH Portage Medical Center to UH Geauga Medical Center, creating a regional hub providing the best outcomes and experiences for mothers and newborns. The transition will take effect Nov. 12, 2022.
Stresses on health care systems locally and nationally, including persistent workforce shortages and declining volumes, have made it difficult for UH to continue to provide the resources needed to deliver the experience our patients deserve. National data shows patient experience improves when the number of similar procedures performed at a facility increases. Consolidating the Portage and Geauga labor and delivery teams to Geauga will allow the focus and resources needed for the highest level of care for mothers, babies and their families.
UH remains committed to the health of the community's women and children. UH Portage will continue to offer comprehensive women and children's services including OB/GYN physician and midwife care, GYN surgical, and breastfeeding and lactation services; only deliveries will consolidate to Geauga. In 2023, UH will establish the UH Portage Breast Health Center, providing innovative care aimed at preventing, diagnosing and treating benign and malignant breast disease.

Providing birthing services to patients requires 24/7 coverage from OB/GYN and pediatric physicians to ensure appropriate support for mom and baby during routine and unexpected labor and delivery events such as emergency cesarean sections. Consolidating labor and delivery services to UH Geauga will offer patients the most comprehensive care including UH Rainbow Babies & Children's pediatric services for newborns.

Caregivers working in labor and delivery at UH Portage will have the option to find other opportunities at UH Portage or transfer to UH Geauga or other facilities within the health system. Positions also will be available at UH Ahuja Medical Center where a new, state-of-the-art labor and delivery and neonatal intensive care unit will open next summer.
