The demolition of the Jätkäsaari Bunker has begun

In May, the demolition site will be fenced off, which will have a slight impact on traffic routes in the area. The Bunker square will be reserved for the demolition site.

The structural demolition, which is visible to the public, will begin in June 2024. In accordance with the permit, this will cover 64% of the building. The timing of the demolition work will take the summer break of the nearby school and daycare centre into account.

Arrangements for summer's demolition work starting in the summer are currently being planned. The City will provide more information on the impacts of the demolition site before the demolition is started.

The estimated end date of this first stage of demolition is at the turn of the year between 2024 and 2025. The final completion of the demolition project depends on the progress of the replacing project, and the schedule of this project is currently undecided.

The reason for the project is the need for new sports and swimming facilities in the area. The contractor originally chosen to carry out the project, SRV Construction, retreated from the project in autumn 2023 due to weakened market conditions and the lack of an investment partner. As a result, the City of Helsinki has begun the search for a new solution for the sports facilities and swimming hall.
