Washington, DC - House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul released the following statement ahead of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's meeting with President Biden at the White House today.

'While I am a strong supporter of a robust U.S.-German relationship, President Biden must use this meeting to encourage Chancellor Merkel to adopt a more clear-eyed policy toward Vladimir Putin's Nord Stream 2 pipeline and the malign actions of the Chinese Communist Party. Above all, he must make clear the U.S. will immediately rescind the ill-conceived national interest waivers on critical Nord Stream 2 sanctions. President Biden and Chancellor Merkel need to realize Berlin could never sufficiently mitigate the severe consequences to Ukraine and European energy security if the pipeline is operationalized. This Russian geopolitical weapon must be stopped before it is too late.'
