Sustainable Cities: Call for Projects in 4 Mediterranean Countries

The "Samim" project, led by the Social and Solidarity Economy Laboratory, has launched a first call for projects on sustainable cities in Morocco, Mauritania, Tunisia and Jordan.

Launched on January 24, 2023, the "Samim" project is holding its first call for projects, focusing on sustainable cities and communities in four southern Mediterranean countries: Morocco, Mauritania, Tunisia and Jordan. Applicants have until February 20 to enter!

The objective is to identify between 20 and 24 innovative initiatives led by civil society organizations (CSOs) in Casablanca, Nouakchott, Tunis and Amman, and to provide them with financial support of between €30,000 and €40,000, as well as technical assistance.

This call for projects aims to support initiatives that address the challenges that cities must overcome to become more accessible, liveable and resilient to climate change. Relevant themes are waste management, the circular economy, sustainable mobility, responsible consumption, ecological urbanism, urban agriculture, sustainable tourism, housing, the energy transition and social and civic innovation.

In order to be selected, projects must also be based in an area characterized by geographical inequality and prone to gender and social exclusion issues, and must be completed within a maximum of one year.

Developed as a follow-up to the SALAM program's initial pilot phase, "Imagining and Building the Mediterranean of Tomorrow", the Samim (meaning "at the heart" in Arabic) project has a total budget of €3.3 million, 90% of which is being financed by AFD. Lab'ess, a Tunisian social and solidarity economy institution, is implementing the project in partnership with the Pulse association and the four support structures selected for this call for projects: Bidaya in Morocco, Ecodev in Mauritania, TCSE in Tunisia and JYIF in Jordan.

The call for projects is open from January 23 to February 20, 2023. A second call for projects is scheduled for 2024.
