Women’s Golf, Tennis Teams Capture Conference Titles

The women's golf team celebrates after winning the American Southwest Conference championship. The Comets have won the tournament three times in the past four seasons.

University of Texas at Dallas student-athletes showed their championship mettle this past week as two teams captured American Southwest Conference (ASC) titles.

The women's golf team won its second straight ASC championship and third in four seasons with a record-setting performance April 30 at The Hideout Golf Club in Brownwood, Texas.

The Comets broke the ASC 54-hole record by 20 shots, a mark they set last season. Their three-round score of 894 was also the lowest in program history.

UTD earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship, which will be held May 21-24 at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

Sofia Trevino took medalist honors with an ASC-record 54-hole score of 213. Trevino won the tournament by nine strokes, and she broke the school three-round total by six shots. Karen Lee made the All-ASC Tournament Team with a fourth-place finish.

The women's tennis team celebrates after winning the American Southwest Conference championship. The Comets have won five straight conference titles.

The women's tennis team won its fifth consecutive ASC title and sixth overall, defeating the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 5-1 on April 28 at the UTD Tennis Complex.

The Comets (10-5) also won the championship in 2013, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. There was no event in 2020 due to COVID-19.

With the win, UTD earned the ASC's automatic berth for the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, which begins Friday, May 10. The pairings, times and locations for the tournament will be announced at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, on NCAA.com.

Saumya Vedula was named ASC tournament MVP as she won all three of her matches in the event, including a pair of doubles victories with teammate Rebecca Jackson. Elyssa Ducret, Reika Nagai and Riya Matharoo joined Vedula as All-ASC selections.

Track and Field

Devan Bailey won the 10,000 meters and 5,000 meters at the American Southwest Conference Championship meet.

The men's and women's track and field teams won a combined six individual events at the American Southwest Conference Championship held April 25-27 at Wilford Moore Stadium in Abilene, Texas.

Graeme Maclean became a three-time conference champion in the 1,500 meters and won the 800 for a second time. He ran the 1,500 in 4:01.76 and the 800 finals in 1:55.85.

Devan Bailey became a three-time champion in the 10,000 meters, winning the race in 33:48.90. He also won the 5,000 meters for the second straight year with a time of 16:14.92.

Frank Douglas won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:42.24, becoming the second champion in the event from UTD. In the women's 800, Sage Herrera won the event for the second consecutive year with a time of 2:18.36.

Men's Golf

Daniel Shofner won medalist honors at the men's golf American Southwest Conference Championship tournament.

Daniel Shofner won the men's golf individual title at the American Southwest Conference Championship on April 21 after making a birdie on the first playoff hole at The Nutcracker Golf Course in Granbury, Texas.

Shofner is the third individual medalist in school history. He and Davis Archer, who tied for fifth place, made the All-ASC Tournament Team. Shofner, Tyler Durden, Parker McCurdy and Cole Riley were selected to the all-conference first team. Archer earned second-team honors.

The Comets, who finished second in the ASC championship, will learn on May 6 if they earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship, which will be held May 14-17 in Boulder City, Nevada.
