Research film receives Royal Television Society nomination
Fri, May 24 2024A powerful research film about the dramatic effect deindustrialisation has had on local communities has been nominated for a Royal Television Society Scotland Award.
Closures and Beginnings draws upon testimonies from people in Lanarkshire to illustrate the impact the loss of heavy industry had on health, community facilities, employment and access to transport and other services.
The animated film, created as part of CommonHealth Catalyst, a Glasgow Caledonian University-led research project, has been shortlisted in the Post Production: Motion Design & Animation category at the RTS Scotland Awards.
The short, produced by creative agency media co-op, concludes: "Sometimes I feel as if this is a forgotten land. We're still here, this wee pocket of Scotland. We've got history here and we've got hope.
"We could do with more support but we're not helpless. We know what we need… try asking us."
Dr Janet Greenlees, Reader in Health History, and Senior Research Fellow Gillian Murray were among Glasgow Caledonian academics who worked on the project, led by Professor Micheal Roy, formerly of the Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health.
The RTS Scotland Awards 2024, sponsored by Screen Skills HETV Fund, Channel 4, Screen Scotland and The Nerve, will take place at The Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow, on June 13.
