Following Sinema’s Request, Administration Grants Major Disaster Declaration for Havasupai Tribe’s Flood Recovery

Declaration ensures federal funds can aid Tribe in recovering from October 2022 flooding

WASHINGTON - Following the request of Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema, the Administration issued a Major Disaster Declaration for the Havasupai Tribe, to ensure the Tribe will receive federal funds to help it recover from flooding in October 2022.

"I'm relieved that the Administration listened to our request to aid the Havasupai Tribe in its recovery from disastrous flooding late last year," said Sinema.

A Major Disaster Declaration -which provides communities in need with access to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding - assists communities responding to and recovering from major disasters or emergencies. Prior to the declaration, Sinema led her colleagues in sending a letter to the Administration detailing the need for additional funds to aid the Havasupai Tribe in recovering from dangerous flooding from October 1 - 2, 2022.

Last summer, Sinema received a flood briefing in Coconino County and saw firsthand the need for flood mitigation and recovery resources to lessen the impact of such disasters. The bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs law, which Sinema negotiated, co-authored, and helped pass into law, includes a historic $12 billion for flood mitigation efforts.
