CCU’s annual Campus Salvage Sale promotes sustainability and raises funds for scholarships

May 7, 2024
Sustain Coastal will host its annual Campus Salvage Sale on Saturday, May 11, from 7-9 a.m. at Coastal Carolina University. The event will be held in the YY Parking Lot on S.C. 544, just south of Brooks Stadium. The sale is designed to promote reuse, keep unwanted items out of landfills, raise money for a sustainability scholarship, and fund future sustainability projects.

The entry fee is $5 per person, and the sale is cash only. Typical items for sale are mirrors, rugs, storage containers, mini-fridges, small appliances, lamps, books, home décor, and much more. Most items are priced at only $1. Mini fridges are $35, small appliances are $5, and all other specialty items are priced as marked. Items are sold as is, and all sales are final. All proceeds continue to further sustainability efforts on campus and contribute to the CCU Endowed Sustainability Scholarship Fund.

The program began in 2008 as an effort to reduce waste, increase awareness of sustainability, and provide the community with tangible resources.

"Over the past decade this program has seen tremendous growth," said Jeremy Monday, senior director of campus environments. "I'm extremely proud of the impact it has made on our campus and community."

Any unsold items are donated to the following local charities: Goodwill, Churches Assisting People, Waccamaw Youth Center, Fostering Hope, North Strand Housing Shelter, Grand Strand Humane Society, Horry County Animal Care Center, Sea Haven for Youth, Community Kitchen, and Shepherd's Table. Donations are also provided to the on-campus CINO Pantry, a free food and resource pantry open to all CCU students, faculty, and staff.

"Campus Salvage offers a unique opportunity for departments at CCU to effectively collaborate on tackling important issues such as waste and hunger," said Monday. "I'm pleased to say that Coastal Carolina University is leading and modeling best practices to combat these issues and engage our community with such a fun event."
